cool eggs.

Hooray! You found my first Easter egg of the season! 🐣 Though I’m not big on decorating real eggs for Easter (exhibit A, B, and C), I’m always up to try a new dyeing technique! Here’s one that uses Cool Whip and food dye.

Materials list:

  • Cool Whip
  • Food dye – I used a gel dye
  • Toothpicks or straws
  • Eggs, hard boiled
  • Tray, optional
  • Spoons or gloves, optional

How to:

  • You can use the Cool Whip in its original container or place in a tray. Add a few drops of food coloring in one or more colors. Use a toothpick to swirl in the colors.
  • Place hard-boiled eggs into the Cool Whip and roll around until the entire egg surface is covered. It’s quite messy; you could also use spoons to assist with the rolling, or gloves if you don’t want your hands to get stained.
  • Let eggs sit in the Cool Whip for a few hours (overnight works well).
  • Remove eggs from the Cool Whip and rinse. The color should have transferred over to the egg shell.

I like this technique as it often leads to a watercolor space feel. It’s super easy for kids, too, and because it’s Cool Whip (versus shaving cream) it’s taste safe. Give it a try and let me know how they turn out! And be on the lookout for two more egg-themed journal entries this season.
