closing the blue door.

Appreciation post for my crafty biz friend Sarah who recently closed her bead shop Blue Door Beads. I have so many fond memories of this shop, including debuting my short-run experimental jewelry line Elmwood and teaching workshops. Over the years I’ve made countless visits and jewelry pieces.

I got to visit on their final day of business and shopped in record time with toddler in tow – in the last 5 minutes! I snagged some fun wooden beads, my favorite nylon cord for making garlands, and a pair of shop-made earrings (above) in Pantone’s color of the year!

I even snagged an invite to their donation day for non-profits, after school programs, and art teachers to ‘shop’ the rest of their inventory and supplies. I went on behalf of Sticky Art Lab and found so many treasures. I was the last one there so I got a few bonus bags including a full set of kumihimo makers and all the letter beads. Post donation day, Sarah gathered even more goodies for me to share with the Sticky Art Lab community. I’m totally planning a series of jewelry making events; we have literal boxes of beads and supplies to share!

Sarah, thank you for your generosity and for sharing bead-tiful jewelry making experiences with the community! Can’t wait to see what you venture into next!

Were you one of the fortunate ones to experience the shop in their 12-year run? Be sure to follow Sarah on Instagram for more beading community!

I just learned that Blue Door Beads has closed and I am at a loss where to go for help and supplies to re-make (lengthen) a turquoise stone necklace. I have relocated to Sonoma County, but was totally willing to drive to Oakland. I know you aren’t the former owner of BDB, if I’m hoping you may know of another option, anywhere between here and there. If so please let me know!
