Coming at ya with a maneki neko in space theme party! For the little’s fourth birthday I asked if he wanted a space/astronaut themed birthday and for a while the answer was yes until it was monster trucks (for a second year in a row), and then finally we settled on maneki neko in space once he heard about my ideas for takoyaki ice cream sandwiches, astronaut helmets, and obstacle courses. Let’s party!

For this party we set up space station activities. The space cat helmets decorating station was a hit! I attempted a last minute paper mache which totally worked, but could have been 5000% better had I given myself more time. I set out markers and star stickers to decorate the helmets, and the kids ran around playing astronaut.

I made moon sand with flour and baby oil (8:1 ratio). We called it kitty litter, and filled a bin with planet bouncy balls, glow-in-the-dark stars, and colorful scoops. This is where my little spent the most time.

We set up a rocket testing area (Thank you to Auntie N for supplying cool rocket toys!) and a catstronaut training obstacle course (a la Dada)! We also had a temporary cat-too station and sticker bar.

To stay on brand with the maneki neko in space theme, we served sushi from our favorite sushi take out spot (Kyoto!), green tea, assorted crunchy snacks from Yaoya-San (our local Japanese market), cheddar cheese rockets (from Trader Joes), and Hello Panda (a Costco-sized pack). Our ‘cake’ this year was a tower of takoyaki ice cream sandwiches.

We found this cute potato dressed like a maneki neko at Five Little Monkeys and had to have it for the party. We strung up a star balloon garland and cat head garland (painted by the little). Table styling by the one and only crafty BFF Angel.

This was such a sweet gathering where I truly felt the love and support from our village. You know who you are – thank you for taking care of my little fam and ringing in my little’s new year.
