magic kingdom.

It’s Throwback Thursday all week because I’m finally sharing details about our big family trip to Florida! By now you should know that when I travel for work I’ll find a way to make it a fun trip. So when I had the opportunity to go to a conference in Orlando, you know I prepped my lil fam for a Disney adventure! We did two days of theme parking – Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, and it was the most fun to do with a kid in tow; he still talks about those adventures and wants to know when we’ll go back so we can go to the other two parks.

The Plan

This was kid’s first Disney experience, Hubby’s first time at Disney World, and basically also my first time since my first and only visit was circa 1989. So we (read “I”) did a ton of research around rides, height requirements, show times, park layout, and must-try snacks. We literally cannot do it all, so I marked attractions as will regret not seeing, would be ok skipping, or go see if e.g., the line is short. Yes, there was an Excel file.

For Magic Kingdom, our must sees were meeting favorite characters (meeting Mickey was our first activity) and riding classics like Dumbo and It’s A Small World. I also wanted Mickey/Minnie ears, and found the perfect pair!

We were in it for the long haul! We brought our stroller on this trip specifically for our theme park days so that our kid could rest and get out of the sun when needed, and also to carry our gear and snacks (hello cup holders!). The stroller parking system just works; and somehow our stroller was always there after we rode the rides.

Protip: Be open to a schedule shift, and spend a little extra time anywhere.

The Snacks

There were so many options for snacks and I loved the order ahead feature for many of the eateries. I wanted to try everything Mickey-shaped! And of course we had our fill of frozen sweet treats because, oowee, the heat and humidity.

The Outfits

For Magic Kingdom we DisneyBounded as Aladdin characters/scenes. My kid dressed up as Genie. Instead of a red belt sash, I found the perfect Mickey fanny pack! And for gold bracelets – wrist sweatbands!

I went as the magic carpet; I found a flowy shades of purple dress, and made gold tassel earrings. We convinced Hubby to dress as the Cave of Wonders because he just had to wear dark clothing and a golden lamp necklace I cut out of metallic felt. 🙂

Share your Magic Kingdom musts below! And make your own golden tassels.

Materials:

How to:

  • Pull out 36″ of thread. Cut into two 12-inch strands, and two 6-inch strands.
  • Keeping the embroidery thread in it’s skein state (i.e., do not unravel), tie one of the 6-inch strands to one “U”/end, tying a double knot to secure all the strands together. Do the same to the other “U”/end. Incorporate the 6-inch strands into the tassel body.
  • Cut the skein in half.
  • Using the 12-inch strand, wrap each tassel to create a neck. You can tie a double knot first, wrap each strand around a few times, then tie another double knot. Trim the excess thread as needed.
  • Use pliers to attach 1 jump ring to the top of one tassel, then attach to the earring hook. Attach a chain of 2 or more jump rings to the top of the other tassel (so it sits slightly lower than the first tassel), then attach to the same earring hook.
  • Repeat for the second skein/earring.
