adinkra symbols.

Another creative library night in the books! Nichole of Asé Arts shared Adinkra symbol history and walked us through how to make our own in stamp form. She shared select symbol meanings and we each picked two that resonated with us: I chose Duafe and Nsoromma.

I’ve made stamps before, but tonight I learned a new technique using easy-to-find, beginner-friendly supplies: self-adhesive foam, firm coaster-like paper, cardboard, and tape. Nichole printed out templates that we ‘traced’ onto the foam by poking or indenting the outline with a pen. Then we cut out the symbol and pressed them onto the coaster. We added a cardboard handle to our stamps with tape.

Then off we went a-stamping! We all shared stamps, too, and had lots of paper to practice our stamping techniques.

I really liked the ink selection, and how the colors showed up on the kraft paper. I now have a collection of Adinkra wrapping paper!

Many thanks to the Friends of the El Cerrito Library for sponsoring this event at the Library, and to Nichole of Asé Arts for sharing the beauty of these symbols with us!
