the mural mafia of el cerrito.

I helped paint a mural! Rachel of @thelittlehill has done it again, gathering El Cerritans in a community building activity along the Ohlone Greenway! For the first time ever I got to experience the art of murals while also meeting some very cool members of my community.

One Saturday morning I put on what is now my official painting outfit (because the paint didn’t come off…) and learned how to prep (clean and prime) walls for murals. Me: Always ready to pose for the camera.

All of the walls we painted on were ‘donated’ by the building owners. Local middle schooler Darcy Wheeler and their artist mom Erin Wheeler went around town to wall scout; Darcy sent the best ones inquiry letters and got a 50% response rate all saying ‘yes’ to a mural!

Meet the self-proclaimed Mural Mafia of El Cerrito.

A few days later on my lunch break I got to help Fernanda of Tinta Art paint the mural she designed. I painted the first layer of the lime green shapes and a cream shape. It was so cool to climb up a ladder to paint up high.

My Hubby and kid came to see me while on a stroll so now whenever we pass by my kid points out the shape he saw me paint.

Here are progress shots of the citrus mural (closest to Manila Avenue along the Ohlone Greenway):

And some WIP shots of others down the street (off of Potrero Avenue):

There are at least 5 (maybe 7 now) new murals on the Ohlone Greenway between Manila Avenue and Blake Street in El Cerrito. Stroll on through for a look through this outdoor gallery!
