My kid’s school hosts an annual art festival (Messy Art Day!), and this year they had a tie dye booth. I snuck in at the end and sopped up leftover dye to get some colorful cord for end of year teacher thank you gifts.

I loved how these all turned out, and I couldn’t wait for the big macrame project reveal.

I made photo/note holders! I absolutely love how the color combos blended for this project, and was thrilled to find out that yes, I did dye enough cord to make everyone a gift! Phew!

My kid was so excited to gift these to his teachers with photos and “books” (what he currently calls greeting cards) he drew for each.

Make your own because I’m so excited for how these turned out!
You will need:
- Twelve strands of 4mm single strand cord, cut to 8 feet each
- One strand 5mm 3-ply cotton cord (or similar), cut to 2 feet (this will be the hanging cord)
- One 12-inch dowl
- Scissors

Pattern:
- Attach each 8-foot cord to the dowel using a Lark’s Head knots.
- Row 1: Square knots
- Row 2: Square knots
- Row 3: Alternating square knots
- Row 4: Square knots
- Row 5: Alternating square knots
- Using the left 6 cords create square and alternating square knots until you have 7 each. Do the same for the right 6 cords.
- For cords 7-10, 11-14, and 15-18 create three columns of 13 square knots each.
- Then create one row of square knots, followed by one row of alternating square knots, and two rows of square knots.
- Create double half hitch knots for every 4 cords.
- Trim and brush out ends as desired.
- Tie on hanging string with double knots on each dowel end, and trim as needed.
- Add a photo, a note, or other keepsake, or hang on its own!
A close up of each!

How we gifted them: We included of photo of my kid with his teachers, and I added an official Crafterateur tag with a description.

More angles, this time outdoors, because I can’t get over the color transitions…

Drop of standout memory from preschool below! And let me know if you make a photo/note holder, too!
