fruits!

Going to pick fruits reminds me of my kid-hood harvesting produce in my parents’ garden. In my adult-hood I don’t have my own garden to go a fruit-pickin’ (sad) but we live near-ish to so many gardens and farms, and opportunities to go fruit picking (yay!). So we went!

First stop was on a whim in Elk Grove when we drove past a strawberry farm – Sun Strawberry! Luckily the fam all hat hats packed in the car for this impromptu sunny farm excursion. Parking is in a dirt lot, and there’s a $3/person admission fee. They charge per pound ($4) or by the bucket ($25).

There are rows of strawberry bushes to choose from, and if picking your own produce isn’t for you, they also sell their strawberries at the produce stand (plus other goodies like green onions). We filled a bucket – so many strawberries! We enjoyed a bunch fresh, but also ended up freezing a few pounds for extra special smoothies.

I loved strawberry picking so much I made plans to go stone fruit picking with a friend! We traveled to Farmer’s Daughter Produce in Brentwood for peaches, nectarines, and apricots!

Parking is ample, there’s a playground for the kiddos, a picnic/frolicking area for the whole fam, and they also had a bountiful produce stand with their fruits plus goods from nearby farms (sweet corn, cherries, and more!).

No entry fee here; just fruit by the pound. We picked and picked and picked…and we left with 17 pounds of fruit!

I can’t wait to discover new farms and learn more about seasonal produce. My now go-to for finding out what’s in season and when farms are open for picking is the Harvest Time in Brentwood guide. Give it a gander if you’re considering a fruit picking adventure.

Have you gone fruit picking at a family farm? Share your favorite spots, please and thank you!
