topo.

I spent a little time in Highland Park last week and stumbled upon some cute, cute, cute shops! Today I’m sharing my Topo adventure! I was enjoying my lunch at Kitchen Mouse (mmm, chilaquiles) and admiring all the decor (plants! weavings!), when I spotted a doorway (It was like a little mouse hole in the wall that you see in cartoons.) into what looked like an adorable market place. After lunch I wandered through… Turns out it was Topo (which means mouse in Italian), the Kitchen Mouse marketplace and to-go counter. I didn’t know they had a shop so I was pleasantly surprised. There were cards, bags, kid’s books and toys, housewares – all kinds of fun stuff. I ended up getting a super cute Kitchen Mouse / Highland Park screen printed tote bag (tote bag addiction and proud of it!). At the to-go counter there were treats as well as a handful of savory/meal selections and drinks. Much like the restaurant, I loved all the bright colors and warm hospitality at Topo. Check it out (and …

shop feature: local take.

You may remember previous posts about me popping up with craft workshops at Local Take (Clips! Terroriums!). Now it’s time for a peek into Local Take the store! Owner Jenn carries over 140 local artists in her stores, including me (spot my felt garlands above). Jenn knows everyone. On this visit I recognized a few of my crafty friends’ goods, but it was exciting to learn of other makers in the area. I love the selection of art prints and colorful goods. You can shop Local Take in the Castro and the Inner Sunset neighborhoods of San Francisco. The Castro location also participates in the now monthly Castro Art Walk on first Thursdays, and the Inner Sunset location hosts the annual Vagabond craft show in the backyard. Stop in for a handmade gift this holiday season!

shop feature: la county store.

A work trip to LA means I get to sneak in some local shopping. Behold: a visit to LA County Store in Silverlake. I love that this store exists and that it’s devoted to featuring Los Angeles County creatives. They even have map on the wall showcasing where all of the goods in the shop are made. The first thing that caught my eye was a corgi butt pillow and these tea cups by Emily Hillburg of Queen for Dinner. There are pillows, wall hangings, kitchen ware, stationary, and so much more.   I love all the local love and neighborhood pride displayed in shop.   Favorite LA neighborhood to wander, go!

shop feature: tender loving empire.

On my “I fell in love with Portland because of this” list is local handmade shop and record label Tender Loving Empire. The first time I visited TLE was in Fall 2011, before I kick-started my Feed the Fish co line. I must have been super inspired by all the handmade awesome in shop! On my second visit to Portland, I made sure to stop in again. The shop was just as exciting as the first visit. I even modeled for them. 😉 For this most recent visit, I made a TLE a flag! #fangirlallday And, I was so excited to see my crafty friend’s plush cuteness in store. You can spot Tally Sue’s raindrops, Oregons, clouds, Voodoo doughnuts, and sunny side up eggs all over the shop. I hope I get to visit again sooner rather than later. I’m also itching to visit their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th locations throughout the city. Any must-see stops on your Portland wishlist? Share below!

shop feature: mischief.

My crafty biz has a new stockist: Mischief! Mischief opened in the Laurel District of Oakland last month and it is looking all the cute. Owner Laura, and her Hubby and pup, run the shop and have curated a colorful array of locally handmade goods. I am loving the simple layout and design of the shop; it really makes the products pop! I made a few custom pennant and wall hanging phrases for Mischief. Spot them all in shop! The pennants are scattered about and the wall  hangings live on this wood board. I totally need a display like this for craft shows! There’s a workshop space in the back and each month the store will be transformed to feature one or two artists of the month. Have you stopped by yet? Go, go, go!

spice girl.

Tell me what you want, what you really really want. I wanna (hah), I wanna (hah), I wanna (hah), I wanna (hah), I wanna really, really, really wanna…go to Oaktown Spice Shop and buy all the things. 😋 I’ve heard lots of great things about the Oaktown Spice Shop, and it lives up to the hype, y’all! If you weren’t a fan of cooking before, this has to be the store that turns you. There are so many kinds of cinnamons, peppers, salts, vanillas, herbs, and spice blends…so much inspiration everywhere. It’s like the Berkeley Bowl of spices. #eastbaylove The aroma is rich. As soon as you walk in you will be enrobed in a patina of fine spice dust. Mmm. You can purchase individual bags or jars of spices, or pick up a prepackaged gift box – think curry blends, BBQ rubs, or chai time mixes. Aside from the quality products, I love the displays of jars and baggies. Don’t you wish your spice cabinet could look like this? This is definitely a stop for …

shop feature: ana apple.

Yay for me! I attended a conference near Old Sacramento so I got to pop into the Ana Apple shop afterwards. I met Samantha. She’s in charge of the awesome events and works the shop, too. Oh what fun! We posed for some snaps with Janie XY toys in tow. I got a special tour, too! The front space is the main shop, the back has the Greenhouse studio and maker space, and the back-back is the Apple Core, where all the Ana Apple products are made. So many cute things here: Baby and toddler gear for your super hip babe, plus plush toys, crocheted rattles, teething jewelry, teepees, and totes. I didn’t want to leave! See you again soon, Ana Apple!

shop feature: station one farmhouse.

A lovely shop tucked away in Point Richmond, Station One Farmhouse boasts an array of repurposed and handmade items. On my visit, shop gal Christine was busy painting furniture to be sold in store. They finish a lot of the pieces in shop – talk about locally made! They’ve got soaps, candles, housewares, and decor items. Hubs and I picked up a jar of Jack Rabbit Farms’ roasted tomatoes and bell peppers. Yum! You’ll find a lot of unique finds at Station One. I’m excited to visit again to see new furniture and painting projects! Where have you shopped local lately? Share below!

shop feature: heritage mercantile co.

Welcome to Heritage Mercantile Co. It’s super fabulous in here. On my visit I met the owner – Jennifer. She’s incredibly sweet and loves all of her featured makers. Jennifer puts together a lovely collection of meaningful, quality wares. I really enjoyed all the displays, too; such great merchandising! You can find something for everyone on your shopping list, including pup. Heritage is a great place to shop for soaps, candles and other housewares. They screen print in store, too, (check out their art prints and cute onesie collection) and hold classes. Heritage is off the main road in a quaint corner lot. Visit them! And if you’re buying a gift, you can get it gift wrapped in a classy wooden box. Oh, and if you’re purchasing lots, you can get a free Heritage tote with $100 purchase. Winning on all levels! Thanks for sharing your shop with me Jennifer! What fun gift shops have you explored recently? Share below!
