dear ball-entine.

Happy Ball-entine’s Day! For my work’s fourth annual Hearts & Crafts gathering we made Valentine’s surprise balls! We had lots of treats set up – some for snacking… …and some for including in the surprise balls. We also had animal erasers, confetti packs, trinkets, stamps, and stickers (all the small gift items!) for everyone to choose from. Plus ribbons and washi tape to embellish the outside of the surprise balls, too. Let’s make surprises! Materials: crepe streamer paper glue stick treats (toys, candy, anything!) scissors Optional: paper strips markers/pens stickers confetti pom poms ribbon How to: Start with 4 feet of crepe paper. Fold accordion style and cut in half lengthwise. You’ll need more than this, but it’s easier to work with shorter pieces. Wrap surprises with crepe paper strips, starting with the largest surprise object. If creating a shape other than a sphere (a heart, for example!), place a template (you can use thick card stock or cardboard) inside the ‘ball’ to help guide the shape. I find that it’s good to use bulkier …

URAQT.

Happy Valentine’s Day! This year, I decided to keep the tradition alive and host Hearts and Crafts 2017 at work. Thanks to Studio DIY for the inspiration, my co-workers got to craft in style. Conversation heart piñatas for all! These make the cutest Valentine’s decor; and they’re perfect for gifting! Materials and tools: paper mache heart boxes, crepe paper streamers, glue stick, scissors, alphabet stickers. Optional materials and tools: awl, darning needle, ribbon/string. Step one: Cut hella fringe Glue one side at a time from the bottom up. Start by glueing a piece of non-fringed crepe paper to the bottom of heart box lid. Overlap with fringe until you reach the top. Trim excess crepe paper. Repeat for the sides of the lid and the back of the base. For the sides of the base, wrap with non-fringed crepe paper. Add alphabet stickers with your phrase of choice. Optional: Poke a hole at the top of the heart with the awl. Use the needle to string the ribbon through the hole. Tie a knot. All the …

piñata party.

Did someone say fuñata? Ok, so I’m a little obsessed with piñatas right now but only because I now know you can make them without the mess of paper mâché. My Daddy’s birthday was coming up so I decided to experiment with a new skill and make him a piñata to fill with all kinds of birthday goodies. All you need is some cardboard, crepe paper (streamer form will be easiest to work with), glue stick, packing tape, scissors, black and white paper (for the eyes) and string (optional, for hanging). First, draw and cut out your shape. Then, trace your shape and cut out a second piece. I made a donkey! For a donkey you will need two donkey shapes, rectangular pieces to link the two main parts together, and triangles for the ears. The rectangular shapes will attach the two sides of the donkey together. Cut your cardboard so the corrugation runs crosswise. This will allow the cardboard to curve easily along your piñata shape. Decide where you want your flap (for placing …
